Nearly 30 percent of Maricopa County's population, or 884,119 people, are poor or working poor. That number reflects an increase of 41 percent between 1990 and 2000...From 2006 The Collaboration for a New Century, www.thecollab.org
According to the US Cencus Bureau the working poor are simply described as, "People who worked, but who, nevertheless, fell under the official definition of poverty" or "People who were in poverty and had at least one working family member".
Also according to the US Cencus Bureau, in 2005, the national poverty level for a family of four was $19,806...that is $1600 a month, or $400 per week.
Let me repeat, 30% of Maricopa County's population makes about $400 per week for a family of four.
Astounding.
How many of those individuals, those at the bottom of the socioeconomic ladder have time to be deep romantic? Are there working poor who can go to Pita Jungle and then grab an ice cream cone? Who among them can drive to Tucson to see the stars for $40 per person? Or contemplate how to find peace, balance and equanimity?
It is only my wealth, vast compared to most of the world's, that allows me the luxury to even be typing at this moment.
I can only say it humbles me.
